AstraZeneca has signed apromisingpromise offreeprices for Nexium 24HR, a generic form of Prilosec, in the US, in the first quarter of 2023.
The offer was announced by the US pharmaceutical company to AstraZeneca as a ‘non-prescription’ offer for Prilosec and Nexium, a drug that has been a mainstay of treatment for heartburn in adults. The offer was valued at $8.25 per pill at the time.
According to a statement on its website, the company has ‘‘designed for patients to continue using Nexium to treat their symptoms and maintain a good, long-term control of their condition’’.
The offer, which is expected to be free, is part of an ongoing program which AstraZeneca is working with the US regulatory authorities and the US Department of Commerce to bring to the table the ‘‘generic Prilosec offer for patients,’’ and is expected to be available in pharmacies in the US in the first quarter of 2023.
In the US, Prilosec, which is sold under the brand name Nexium as a treatment for gastroesophageal reflux disease, is being used for people who have difficulty swallowing tablets, such as children, due to stomach problems or acid reflux.
The US government, the US Food and Drug Administration and AstraZeneca are working together with the US National Institutes of Health to bring to a halt the development and approval of an unapproved generic version of Nexium for patients who are unable to tolerate the branded product. The company, however, has agreed to the US government’s request to the regulatory agency to allow generic Prilosec to be marketed in the US.
Prilosec and Nexium are the only drugs in the same class of medicines known as PPIAstraZeneca is currently working with US drug regulatory authorities to bring a generic version of Prilosec to the market in the US in 2023.
